Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Telephone Systems
by John Wesser, Diversified Communications Solutions Inc., Ltd.

What is more familiar than the ubiquitous telephone? It has become a staple of modern business. But like the progression from rotary to push-button, and analog to digital phones, technology continues to march on and at a phenomenal rate. In the mid 1990's, we were introduced to the Internet and the explosion of data and information. Today, this "Information Superhighway" has become a medium of convergence of data, voice, images, and more.

When most people think of the Internet, they usually think of web sites providing news and entertainment. However, with the introduction of high-speed Internet connectivity and the improvements in networking technology, a host of new applications has emerged from music and video, to e-business activity, and the making of toll-free telephone calls.

The Internet, utilizing the Internet Protocol (IP), is a shared medium and is not owned by any one entity. Businesses of the 21st century are taking advantage of this new contrivance of becoming IP-enabled to enhance their business communications and thus their bottom lines. They are achieving this by putting into practice such things as Virtual Private Networks (VPN), and implementing Voice over IP (VoIP) systems. Even major telecommunication companies, like AT&T and MCI, have recognized the significance of this medium versus the traditional Publicly Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which relies on less efficient and more expensive, transporting methods.

As this technology has progressed, industry standards have emerged such as the H.323 protocol, which provides a foundation for audio, video, and data communications across IP-based networks Including the Internet. In addition, the Windows®-based, personal computer has also become the standard platform for most business applications. Smart business people realize that VoIP systems based upon these industry proven standards and user-friendly interfaces, such as those from AltiGen Communications, are the most economical and logical investments to be made.

But just what are some compelling reasons to consider investing in a VoIP system? Well there are many, and they are all center on improved communications, ease of use, integration with your existing infrastructure, and those all-important cost savings that alone makes this a "must-have" technology.

First of all, a VoIP system integrates with your existing computer network. This immediately cuts your cabling costs in half and also reduces your maintenance and staffing requirements. Changes are made in seconds with a few mouse clicks instead of a two-hour service call to reconfigure your wiring closet. An IP phone anywhere in the world, connected via your network, VPN, or the Internet, is just a short 3 or 4 digit extension away. Features such as unified messaging, one number access, virtually unlimited voice mail, detailed call reporting, call center management, integration with third party software applications, and a plethora of other valuable tools, just cannot be economically offered (if at all) with traditional phone systems.

For your business to compete in today's economy, you want tools and assets that are standards-based, reliable, efficient, economical, and scalable to grow with your company. That's why the Diversified Communications Solutions / AltiGen team is here - to help you implement business solutions to make your company viable in the 21st century.
